Linda Lewis made her way slowly to becoming professional artist—an art minor, an educator in the public schools, a mother of four—before becoming more serious about making clay objects 16 years ago. Her work as an educator with diverse groups of children and adults informs her work as an artist. Her figures reflect her penchant for people and the stories they tell. By observing their demeanor, facial expressions, body language, and how people stand, interact, and tell their stories, Lewis creates clay figures that express common threads of the human experience. Her background in painting informs the surfaces by adding colorful designs, script, textures and mark making that brings a mood and context that encourage viewers to add their own story. In addition to her figurative work she often creates whimsical, functional ceramic pieces perfect for gift giving during the holiday season.
Her work is in many personal and institutional collections, national exhibitions and juried into many fine arts festivals.
