Sarah Spain
Sarah Spain is an Iowa-born multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the relationship between humanity, nature, consumption, and environmental responsibility. Working with sculpture, installation, painting, and assembled, she transforms, discarded plastics, salvaged, electronics, and reclaimed materials into evocative works that challenge or ideas of value and what we choose to keep or throw away. Her practice is informed by her background in art therapy, global travels and upbringing on a family farm.
Based at Mainframe Studios in Des Moines, Spain uses walking and collecting as part of her creative process, finding beauty and meaning in overlooked object, objects and materials. Influenced by Zen, Butoh, my dollar traditions, and environmental activism, her work often explores the tension between the individual and collective through the reoccurring words “WE” and “ME”. Her work invites viewers to look again, consider what they value and recognize their place within the larger world.
